How Much Time Editing Actually Costs You Per Video (a Real Calculation)
A concrete way to calculate the actual cost, not just a vague sense that editing 'takes a while.'
The calculation most people skip
Editing time is usually estimated from memory, after the fact, which tends to undercount — it's easy to forget the interruptions, the re-exports, the small fixes made after "finishing." A more accurate method: time yourself explicitly, start to finish, on your next three videos, including everything from opening the raw clip to uploading the final export.
What to include that's easy to forget
- Re-exports. Noticing an error after a first export and fixing it counts as editing time, even though it feels like a separate, smaller task.
- Caption corrections. Going back to fix a mistimed or mistranscribed caption after the "main" edit is done.
- Decision time. Time spent deciding which line to emphasize, or which B-roll to use, is real editing time even though it doesn't look like active work in a timeline.
Turning the number into a cost
Multiply your actual per-video time by videos-per-week, then by whatever your time is worth — either literally, if editing is time you could otherwise spend on paid work, or in terms of how many additional videos you could produce in that time instead.
An example
3 hours per video, 3 videos per week: 9 hours weekly, roughly 470 hours a year — spent specifically on the mechanical parts of editing, not on ideation or filming. At even a modest hourly value, that's a substantial, concrete cost most creators have never actually calculated.
Using this number to evaluate any automation option
Once you have your real per-video time, evaluating whether a tool, template, or workflow change is worth it becomes a straightforward comparison: does it meaningfully reduce that number, and does the reduction outweigh its cost (in money, setup time, or both) within a reasonable number of videos?
Once you know your real per-video cost, compare it against a one-time template price — for most creators posting more than a couple of times a month, the math resolves fast.
